Delaware Gears Up to Allow Raw Milk Sales | Dairy Industry Update

Delaware dairy farms will soon have the opportunity to sell raw milk legally, with the state set to release regulations for the program around March 1. Following a public hearing, the permitting process could begin as early as May, allowing for a new option for the state’s dwindling number of dairy farms. The decision to legalize raw milk sales last year came after the Ag Department and Delaware Farm Bureau dropped their opposition. Farms will need permits, food safety risk management plans, and follow testing requirements to sell or distribute raw milk. Avian influenza will be among the contaminants farms must test for.

Proponents say raw milk provides health benefits, while detractors cite risks of foodborne illness compared to pasteurized milk. Despite concerns, supporters believe that responsible handling by consumers can mitigate risks. Governor Matt Meyer has not yet discussed the issue with Ag Secretary Don Clifton. The regulations will focus on permitting fluid milk sales initially, with potential for expansion to other dairy products made from raw milk.
