Delaware residents were left confused after seeing forecasts of a major snowstorm heading their way, only for those predictions to disappear. Meteorologist Matt Powell explained that the discrepancy was due to differences in the computer models used by forecasters. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the American-based Global Forecast System (GFS) had differing predictions for the storm’s path and intensity. Initially, the models indicated a significant snow event for Delaware, but as time went on, the storm’s trajectory shifted, resulting in lower snowfall totals.
While the National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for the region, predicting 2-5 inches of snow, Powell believes that the storm may miss Delaware entirely. However, parts of the Virginia Tidewater area could see heavy snowfall. Despite the uncertainty, the weather community is closely monitoring the situation and preparing for possible changes in the storm’s path. This event serves as a reminder of the challenges of forecasting winter weather accurately.
