Maryland authorities arrest leader of cult-like group with ties to numerous murders

Jack LaSota, the leader of a cult-like group linked to multiple violent crimes including the fatal shooting of a Border Patrol officer in Vermont, was arrested in Maryland along with two associates. LaSota, who espouses the dangers of artificial intelligence, faces charges of trespassing, firearms possession, and obstruction of justice. LaSota, previously thought to have died in a boating accident, has been connected to various violent attacks over the past few years.

One of LaSota’s followers, Michelle Zajko, was arrested in connection with the killing of her parents in Pennsylvania but was later released without charges. Another follower, Ophelia Bauckholt, was fatally shot by Border Patrol agents during a traffic stop in Vermont. Bauckholt allegedly pulled out a firearm before being shot. The circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation.

LaSota’s group has been involved in a series of violent incidents, including a stabbing and homicide intended to prevent a witness from testifying in a trial. US Border Patrol agent David Maland was also killed in the shootout with Bauckholt. Teresa Youngblut, who was with Bauckholt during the incident, has pleaded not guilty to firearms charges.

LaSota’s arrest comes after a long investigation involving federal law enforcement and local prosecutors. The full extent of the criminal activities of LaSota and her followers is still being uncovered, but authorities are continuing their efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
