Venomous Snake Discovered Among Bananas at New Hampshire Supermarket

A grocery store in New Hampshire had an unexpected visitor last week when a venomous snake was found hidden among a shipment of bananas. The approximately 1.5-foot-long Ornate Cat-eyed Snake, native to Ecuador, was discovered by employees at Market Basket in Manchester. Conservation officer Griffin McKeown of the NH Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division said that it was a first for him to find a venomous snake in such a situation. The snake was unharmed and has since been rehomed at Rainforest Reptile Shows Inc., an educational organization specializing in exotic animal care. The organization assures that they take extreme precautions with the snake due to its venomous nature, and consumers need not worry about similar incidents. Rainforest Reptile Inc. plans to post updates on the snake’s progress on their social media platforms and will allow followers to vote on its name. The company thanked officials for their assistance in transitioning the snake to its new home, noting that the Cat-eyed Snake is a specialized species that primarily feeds on amphibians and lizards. Overall, the situation was an unusual occurrence but was handled efficiently and safely by the involved parties.
