SS United States starts its voyage: The iconic ocean liner sets sail down the Delaware River from Philadelphia

The historic ocean liner, SS United States, began its journey down the Delaware River from Philadelphia after nearly 30 years. The vessel, known for its record-breaking speed and iconic smoke stacks, is being towed to the Gulf Coast where it will become the world’s largest artificial reef. The move comes after legal battles and delays, with the ship’s new owners completing safety requirements for the voyage. Warren Jones, a board member of the SS United States Conservancy, expressed mixed feelings as the ship left Philadelphia, noting that while it’s not the ending they wanted, it’s good the ship will have a new life rather than being scrapped. Fans of the ship gathered to bid it farewell as it heads towards its underwater grave off the coast of Florida. Once the ship arrives in Florida, it will be cleaned of toxins and asbestos before being sunk as an artificial reef. The journey along the eastern seaboard is expected to take roughly two weeks, with the ship’s final home being under 180 feet of water off the coast of Destin, Florida.
