Delaware State University has recently achieved a higher status among the Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education, reaching the R2 level. This places DSU among only 14 Historically Black Colleges and Universities to hold R2 status. The R2 classification is based on the size of the research portfolio and doctoral degree production, with R2 indicating a high level of both. Melissa Harrington, DSU’s Associate Vice President of Research, explained that this achievement signifies the university’s progress towards becoming a top research institution.
DSU had more than 40 doctoral graduates and research expenditures of $45 million last year, a significant increase from $17 million in 2017. Harrington highlighted that this achievement enhances the university’s reputation and helps in recruiting top talent. She emphasized the importance of producing doctoral graduates who can become leaders in higher education and administration. Additionally, DSU’s research portfolio provides opportunities for undergraduates to engage in impactful research.
