Former All-Pro and All-American running back Clinton Portis has joined DeSean Jackson’s staff at Delaware State as the new running backs coach, the program announced on Wednesday. Portis, who played at the University of Miami from 1999 to 2001 before a successful NFL career from 2002 to 2010, brings a wealth of experience to his new coaching role.
During his time at Miami, Portis won a national championship in 2001 and earned third-team All-American honors. He then went on to make a name for himself in the NFL, spending the majority of his career with the Washington Redskins/Commanders and earning two Pro Bowl selections. In total, Portis rushed for nearly 10,000 yards and scored 75 touchdowns over his professional career.
In 2022, Portis was sentenced to six months in prison for his involvement in a conspiracy to defraud the NFL’s medical benefits program, although he has since maintained his innocence in the matter. Despite this legal issue, Portis is now focusing on his coaching career and is excited to be working alongside Jackson at Delaware State.
Portis is just one of many former NFL stars making the transition to coaching in college football. With DeSean Jackson at the helm as head coach, and the recent additions of Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk to Deion Sanders’ staff at Colorado, as well as Eddie George at Tennessee State and Trent Dilfer at UAB, the college football coaching landscape is seeing an influx of former NFL talent. Delaware State fans can expect Portis to bring his knowledge and passion for the game to the sidelines this upcoming season.
