Delaware Lawmakers Propose New Energy Bill Assistance Legislation | Current Updates

State lawmakers in Delaware have introduced House Bill 50 to establish the Delaware Energy Fund, aimed at providing financial assistance to moderate income households struggling with rising energy costs. The bill, sponsored by Democratic Representative Debra Heffernan and Senator Stephanie Hansen, would also bolster the existing Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. The legislation comes in response to a surge in energy bills, with some residents reporting bills that are two to four times higher than usual. However, Republican Senator Gerald Hocker believes the bill does not address the root cause of the issue, which he attributes to fines imposed on utilities for not meeting sustainable energy requirements. He argues that the money should be used to help struggling customers pay their bills. Lawmakers in both Delaware and Maryland are paying attention to the outcry, with discussions underway to potentially return some electric fees to customers. The proposed Delaware Energy Fund would be available to households earning less than 350% of the Federal Poverty Level, funded through existing green energy programs. House Bill 50 is currently under consideration by the House Natural Resources and Energy Committee.
