Human remains believed to be those of Israeli hostage Shiri Bibas were returned by Hamas two days after initially returning the wrong body. The Bibas family confirmed the identification of Shiri’s remains and expressed their devastation at her murder while in captivity. The Israel Defense Forces have not officially confirmed the identity of the remains released by Hamas.
Hamas released the remains of four hostages as part of a ceasefire agreement with Israel, but it was later discovered that the body believed to be Shiri Bibas was someone else. This mistake caused outrage among Israeli officials and was deemed a serious violation of the ceasefire. Hamas claimed that Bibas’ remains may have been mixed up with others during an Israeli airstrike.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hamas of a cynical act, stating that they failed to return Bibas and instead placed the body of a Gazan woman in the coffin. Shiri Bibas, along with her two children, Ariel and Kfir, were abducted from their kibbutz in 2023, with the children later being brutally murdered in captivity according to the IDF.
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum expressed their support for the Bibas family in their time of grief, marking the end of over 500 days of uncertainty and pain. The IDF is still reviewing reports of the release of a new body, as the investigation into the mistaken return of the remains continues.
