Should the Legislature use technology to monitor students?

A bill debated in the Nebraska Legislature on Friday would require schools to disclose how they surveil, track, and monitor students, as well as whether they sell student data. Sen. Danielle Conrad introduced the bill, stating that the use of technology like digital hall passes and cameras in schools needs to be monitored to protect students against Big Tech. The bill has garnered support across party lines, with both conservative and liberal lawmakers expressing concerns about student data privacy.

However, the proposal has faced pushback from school groups, such as administrators, teachers, and school boards, who argue that it could compromise school safety and impose unnecessary costs. Sen. Kathleen Kauth, a conservative Republican, has highlighted concerns about students’ data potentially being sold for profit. Lawmakers adjourned without reaching a vote on the bill, with discussions ongoing about addressing security issues and protecting student privacy while ensuring school safety.

In addition to the school surveillance bill, a public hearing was held on a proposal to strengthen health care providers’ rights to opt out of procedures that violate their religious, ethical, or moral beliefs. Medical professionals expressed concerns about discrimination against those with objections to certain procedures. However, opponents of the bill, including the Nebraska Hospital Association, argued that current federal laws already provide accommodations for strongly held beliefs and that expanding these protections could impact patient care. The committee has not yet taken action on the proposal.
