A man in Memphis was accidentally shot by his own dog when the animal jumped on the bed and its paw got stuck in the trigger guard of a gun, causing it to go off. The man was grazed in the upper left thigh and was taken to the hospital in noncritical condition. The dog, a pit bull puppy named Oreo, was said to be the cause of the accidental shooting. The man’s friend who was present at the time, took the gun with her when she left the scene. Tennessee does not have any state laws requiring firearm owners to lock or store their weapons in a certain way, but the Memphis Police Department encourages gun owners to keep their firearms locked at home and offers free gun locks at precincts. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of gun safety and proper storage to prevent accidents like this from occurring in the future.
