Founder of a Texas megachurch, Robert Morris, faces indictment for engaging in lewd acts with a child

Robert Morris, founder of Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas, has been indicted on five counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child. The abuse began in 1982 when Morris, then 21, was visiting the victim’s home in Oklahoma and continued for four years. Morris resigned as senior pastor of the megachurch last year after admitting to inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady but did not disclose the victim’s age until later. The church’s Board of Elders claimed they were not aware of the girl’s age or the extent of the abuse, prompting Morris’ resignation. The victim, identified as C.C., stated that Morris asked her to keep the abuse a secret. Cindy Clemishire, the victim, expressed gratitude for authorities pursuing the case after almost 43 years of waiting for justice. Morris, a former member of President Trump’s spiritual advisory committee, has not yet been taken into custody. The charge of lewd or indecent acts on a child is a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Morris has not yet commented on the indictment, and it is unclear if he has legal representation.
