Governor Matt Meyer recently announced his five picks for the Diamond State Port Corporation (DSPC) Board, following a ruling from the Delaware Supreme Court that he was within his right to withdraw nominations made by former Governor Bethany Hall-Long. Meyer’s selections include a diverse group of individuals with expertise in various fields, such as business, construction, and labor.
The DSPC Board oversees the Port of Wilmington and the development of a new container port terminal in Edgmoor. This project is estimated to create thousands of new jobs and generate significant tax revenues for the state. However, it faced a setback when a federal judge ruled in favor of legal challenges brought by the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority.
During Senate confirmation hearings, there was controversy surrounding the nomination process, with some nominees claiming they were asked to withdraw their names with the promise of being renominated by Meyer. Despite these challenges, Meyer remains committed to moving the Edgmoor Port project forward once permitting issues are resolved.
While there have been differences of opinion between legislative leaders and the Governor, Meyer is focused on collaboration and moving past the disputes. He looks forward to expanding the Port of Delaware and ensuring it continues to provide quality jobs for Delaware families.
In addition to the new candidates for the DSPC Board, several new cabinet heads have been appointed, including Secretary of State Charuni Patibanda-Sanchez as the new chair. All nominations await Senate confirmation as the state looks towards the future of the port development project.
