Explaining the Latest VRAM Technology: What is GDDR7?

Nvidia’s latest RTX 50 series graphics cards are making waves in the industry with their utilization of GDDR7 memory, the latest standard in VRAM technology. First announced by Samsung in 2022, GDDR7 offers significant improvements over its predecessor, GDDR6X, with double the performance at 32Gbps. Currently exclusive to Nvidia’s RTX 50 series, GDDR7 is designed for AI, gaming, and GPU-accelerated computing tasks.

Micron showcased its 1β node DRAM process node in mid-2023, and by July of that year, the first-generation of GDDR7 memory was qualified for use. With a bandwidth of 32Gbps per pin, first-generation GDDR7 offers increased density and power efficiency compared to previous generations, resulting in reduced thermals and latency.

Although only Nvidia’s RTX 50 series currently utilizes GDDR7, the potential for wider adoption in AI workstations and non-gaming GPUs is significant. Samsung’s announcement that GDDR7 can achieve speeds over 40Gbps suggests even greater performance improvements on the horizon.

While GDDR7 provides a noticeable performance boost in high-end gaming scenarios, the impact may be less pronounced in entry-level applications. However, as the technology evolves and becomes more widely adopted, the performance gap is expected to increase.

With GDDR7 expected to remain in use throughout the 2020s and possibly into the early 2030s, Nvidia is likely to incorporate the technology into future graphics cards. However, the adoption by AMD and Intel remains uncertain, as both companies continue to use slower GDDR6 memory in their current lineup of graphics cards.
