Protest draws crowd to Dover in opposition to planned cuts to veterans’ services

Veterans and supporters gathered outside the Legislative Hall in Dover to protest the Trump administration’s planned cuts to veterans’ programs. The nationwide protest drew participants from Sussex and Kent Counties, who spoke about the impact of these cuts on veterans in need of care. Anthony Jackson, a veteran from Smyrna, spoke about the importance of keeping promises made to veterans and providing them with the care they deserve. Mitzi Kratt shared a personal story of a friend who will suffer from the funding cuts. Delaware is home to about 72,000 veterans, and the Wilmington VA Hospital serves around 44,000 vets in the region. Protesters emphasized the need for more support for the VA and its staff, rather than layoffs and cuts. Members of the advocacy group Indivisible Southern Delaware also joined the march to show solidarity with veterans and other groups at risk of losing benefits. The group is working with Rep. Sarah McBride to assess the potential impact of these cuts on Delawareans. The protest highlighted the importance of honoring commitments made to veterans and ensuring they receive the care and support they were promised.
