Airman Quinterius Chappelle, stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the killing of 21-year-old Sahela Sangrait. Sangrait’s badly decomposed body was discovered on the base in March, months after she was reported missing. The nature of Chappelle and Sangrait’s relationship is unclear, and neither the Air Force base nor the Air Force has commented on the case. Chappelle, an active-duty airman assigned to the 28th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, entered the service in 2019. Military officials, including Ellsworth’s commander, are cooperating with local law enforcement in the investigation. Sangrait, a Native American, was last seen in Eagle Butte before reportedly traveling to Box Elder to retrieve belongings before embarking on a trip to California. Chappelle is currently being held in the Pennington County Jail, with no bond set. The U.S. attorney’s office for South Dakota will prosecute the case, which also involves local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. Anyone with information about Sangrait’s killing is urged to contact the FBI’s Rapid City office.
