Xi Jinping embarks on charm offensive amid tumultuous Asia tariff situation

Chinese President Xi Jinping is taking advantage of America’s fractured economic relationships following the Trump administration’s announcement and relaxation of tariffs on U.S. trading partners. Xi embarked on a Southeast Asia tour, starting in Vietnam and then Malaysia, to emphasize China’s commitment to global trade and cooperation in contrast to protectionism. The next stop on Xi’s tour is Cambodia, another country heavily impacted by U.S. tariffs.

Xi’s goal is to position China as the world’s preferred trading partner amidst the chaos created by U.S. tariffs. His efforts to win over Southeast Asia, Europe, and even long-standing U.S. allies in Asia are part of a broader response to Trump’s economic policies. Xi is using Trump’s aggressive tariff decisions to drive allies closer to China. The European Union, faced with the possibility of Chinese products flooding their market due to U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods, may be inclined to work with China.

Despite China’s economic leverage and focus on building international alliances, challenges remain. Concerns over China’s political values and human rights record may hinder closer ties with some countries. Traditional U.S. allies in Asia, such as Japan and South Korea, are caught between their security relationships with the U.S. and economic ties with China.

With its significant holdings of U.S. government bonds, China also holds leverage over the U.S. in terms of public expenditure financing. As Xi continues to position China as a reliable trading partner, its economic influence and diplomatic efforts may tilt the balance of power in its favor.
