Florida college students are anxious and scared due to the school’s collaboration with ICE on campus

After Florida International University’s police department entered into an agreement with the federal government to carry out immigration enforcement on campus, many students are terrified. Some students, including those without legal immigration status, are avoiding certain parts of the campus considered risky in fear of deportation. Several universities in Florida, including FIU, have agreements with ICE under the 287(g) program, aligning with Governor Ron DeSantis’ immigration measures and President Trump’s deportation efforts.

The collaboration between universities and ICE has caused fear among students and faculty, with protests being held against the decision. The Trump administration’s crackdown on foreign students, revoking visas and ordering them to leave the country, has added to the anxiety on college campuses. The administration’s policy change, making college campuses potential immigration enforcement targets, contrasts with earlier guidance that restricted federal agencies from carrying out immigration enforcement in sensitive locations.

Universities in Florida have experienced changes under DeSantis, including the banning of critical race theory and termination of faculty members after adopting post-tenure reviews. The Dream.US organization has withdrawn scholarships for hundreds of students in Florida due to the state’s decision to end in-state tuition for students without legal immigration status and the universities’ agreements with ICE. Students at FIU, both U.S. citizens, expressed concerns about racial profiling by campus police and the fear that the campus, intended to be a melting pot, may no longer be a safe space.
