Henlopen Acres considering stricter tree regulations

Henlopen Acres officials are considering changes to town code to protect the tree canopy on private property. Mayor Joni Reich introduced the topic after noticing many trees being cut down for new houses. The proposed changes include restrictions on tree removal and maintenance in setback areas, an increase in minimum tree density, and a 90-day moratorium on tree removal while commissioners review the issue. Town Manager Anna Fagan presented a draft of the proposals, which include fines, arborist certification, tree planting specifications, and more.
Commissioner John Staffier, who previously opposed telling property owners what to do, now believes the town must step in. Commissioner Tiffany Derrickson said not implementing changes would be a failure. A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for May 23, with a second hearing on the moratorium set for May 5.
In other news, the town approved the final draft of its 2024 comprehensive plan. The plan will be submitted for state review before final approval from the governor. Residents can access the plan on the town’s website or at town hall.
