Suspect Identified in Decades-Old Indiana Woman Cold Case Killing

The Indiana State Police have identified a suspect in the 1972 murder of Phyllis Bailer, who was found shot and sexually assaulted in a ditch with her unharmed 3-year-old daughter. Bailer and her daughter were traveling to her parents’ house when they went missing, and her body was discovered the next day along the side of the road. DNA evidence on Bailer’s clothing was used to develop a profile that eliminated the main suspect at the time. In 2024, a stronger DNA profile was developed, linking Fred Allen Lienemann, a Michigan man with a criminal history, to the crime. Lienemann was killed in Detroit in 1985 in a brutal manner, according to reports. If he were alive, he would have been charged with Bailer’s murder. This case highlights the importance of forensic genealogy and advancements in DNA testing in solving cold cases.
