Delaware State Representative Speaks Out About DUI Conviction
Delaware State Representative Hensley recently made a public statement expressing his deep disappointment in his poor judgment that led to a DUI crash. Following the incident, Hensley has chosen to enter a recovery program and make significant changes in his personal life. House Minority Leader Tim Dukes supported the Speaker’s decision to remove Hensley from the Joint Finance Committee.
This was not Hensley’s first DUI conviction, with the first occurring in 2009. Despite this, he avoided mandatory prison time for a second alcohol-related offense due to the previous conviction being over 10 years old. The recent incident, which occurred in November 2024, resulted in Hensley crashing into another vehicle while leaving a gas station, causing the other driver to sustain injuries. The elderly driver later passed away from unrelated causes.
Hensley’s blood alcohol level was found to be .16, double the legal limit. The Attorney General’s office confirmed that he was intoxicated at the time of the crash. In response to the incident, House Minority Leader Tim Dukes commented on the Speaker’s decision to remove Hensley from his committee position, stating that they would abide by her choice.
This story was made possible by a statehouse coverage grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Minor-Brown, who also acknowledged the complexity of addiction, emphasized the importance of compassion for those struggling while still holding individuals accountable for their actions.
