A recent study has shown that individuals with prediabetes can significantly reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by following a digital lifestyle programme. The research found that those with prediabetes who participated in an online behavioural intervention were 46% less likely to develop diabetes in the next 10 years compared to those not on a digital programme. Type 2 diabetes is associated with various health complications, making prevention crucial.
The study, which examined over 130,000 adults, found that participants who followed a digital dietitian-guided lifestyle programme saw significant improvements in their health outcomes. Those with prediabetes in the digital intervention group were also less likely to develop type 2 diabetes over the next decade. Additionally, participants with type 2 diabetes who followed the digital lifestyle intervention were more likely to achieve remission compared to those who did not follow the programme.
The authors of the study emphasize the importance of early identification and intervention as metabolic deterioration begins before clinical diabetes is diagnosed. While fully digital interventions may have more modest impacts than blended or face-to-face approaches, the results of this study indicate the potential benefits of digital lifestyle programmes in reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
