Efforts to Promote Road Safety Include Love Bug Campaign

State officials in Delaware are hoping that a yellow cartoon Love Bug will help drive greater safety on the state’s roads. The Love Bug campaign, which has been in use for about five years, aims to promote safe driving habits and encourage drivers to look out for one another while on the road. However, feedback from a recent town hall meeting suggests that the campaign is not yet widely recognized by the public.

During the town hall meeting, topics discussed included motorcycles, pedestrians, vehicle occupant safety, speeding, and drivers impaired by alcohol and other substances. Suggestions were also made for more effective messaging to increase road safety, including a stronger, more impactful message similar to the successful Click It or Ticket seatbelt safety campaign.

One innovative solution highlighted at the meeting was the offering of vouchers for free Uber and Lyft rides during holidays associated with drinking alcohol, in an effort to discourage drinking and driving. The Love Bug campaign organizers are now considering ways to localize the campaign and influence driver behavior through targeted messages in specific communities.
