Press Release: Concerns Rise for Delaware’s Senior Medicare Patrol Amid Funding Uncertainty
Delaware’s Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) program, dedicated to helping residents identify fraud and errors in their Medicare services, faces potential funding cuts under the Trump administration. The SMP, which operates in all 50 states and four territories, relies on federal grants to cover staff salaries, promotional materials, and operational costs.
Barbara Jackson, the program director, revealed that approximately $60 billion is lost annually to Medicare fraud. She emphasized that safeguarding these funds is critical to maintaining program integrity and preventing future hikes in premiums for beneficiaries. In Delaware, about 23% of residents rely on Medicare benefits, making the SMP’s mission vital.
In response to the looming threats, Delaware recently joined a lawsuit aimed at preserving $38 million in federal funding for public health initiatives. Jackson expressed concerns regarding the fragility of their resources, stating, “We haven’t been told that we won’t be funded… just in one day you could be just sliced off.” The anxiety felt by her team has intensified as the administration discusses funding cuts that could severely impact the SMP’s operations.
Despite the uncertainty, Jackson remains hopeful that the program can continue through the upcoming fiscal year. However, she cautions that reliance on future budgets is tenuous. “I just would hate to see it go just because they don’t think it’s needed,” she lamented.
As Delaware residents continue to navigate Medicare, the SMP’s community engagement staff remains active at local libraries and health fairs, working to raise awareness about fraud and ensure the protection of valuable resources essential for seniors.
