The Cleveland Browns made a surprising choice in the NFL draft, selecting quarterback Shedeur Sanders from Colorado with the 144th pick in the fifth round. Many analysts had predicted him as a first-round prospect, potentially going as high as No. 3 to the New York Giants or No. 21 to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he remained undrafted during the initial rounds. Five other quarterbacks were chosen before Sanders, including Miami’s Cam Ward and Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart.
Shortly after the pick was announced, Sanders expressed his gratitude on social media, posting “Thank you GOD.” The Browns highlighted their new acquisition by showcasing a sizzle reel of Sanders, referring to him as “Another playmaker in the mix.” NBC Sports’ Connor Rogers ranked Sanders as the best available prospect before his selection, placing him 30th on his draft board.
Sanders, the son of NFL Hall of Famer and Colorado coach Deion Sanders, began his collegiate career at Jackson State in 2021 before moving with his father to Colorado. In his senior season, Sanders stood out, earning the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year title, completing 74% of his passes for 4,134 yards, with 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He was instrumental in Colorado’s football resurgence, contributing to a dramatic improvement from just one win the previous season to nine wins in 2024, the school’s best showing since 2016.
Throughout the draft process, Sanders faced scrutiny regarding his character off the field, but his performance on the field clearly spoke for itself, setting the stage for his professional career.
