A single-engine Mooney M20TN plane crashed in Tennessee on Saturday morning, resulting in the deaths of all three individuals on board. The crash occurred south of Upper Cumberland Regional Airport in Sparta around 11:50 a.m., according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Dean Selby, the airport director, reported that the airport received communications regarding the plane’s distress shortly before losing contact. The aircraft had departed from Alabama and was attempting to land at the airport when the incident occurred.
Emergency management teams, fire and rescue workers, and volunteers participated in the search for the crash site, which was eventually located with assistance from an aerial search arranged by the airport. Selby characterized the crash site as “remote.” The FAA has begun a formal investigation into the incident, with the National Transportation Safety Board set to take the lead and arrive on-site the following day. Authorities are withholding the victims’ identities pending notification of their next of kin.
This incident is part of a troubling trend, as several small plane crashes have occurred recently, often resulting in fatalities. Just last month, a plane crashed into a home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, while another incident in upstate New York followed shortly after. Additional crashes in Nebraska and Illinois led to multiple casualties, highlighting increasing concerns over aviation safety. Sparta is located approximately 96 miles southeast of Nashville, and the ongoing investigations aim to shed light on the circumstances surrounding these tragic events.
