WFP Faces Food Shortage Crisis in Gaza

The World Food Programme (WFP) has announced it has exhausted its food supplies in Gaza, 54 days after Israel’s blockade on the territory began. This blockade, imposed on March 2, halted all humanitarian and commercial goods, leaving the WFP as the primary provider of hot meals. With all border crossings closed, over 116,000 tons of food intended for Gaza remain stranded. The WFP described this blockade as the longest in Gaza’s history, aggravating already fragile food systems and markets.

Currently, more than 2 million residents face severe risks of starvation and diseases. The agency warned that essential supplies, including food, water, and cooking fuel, are critically low, increasing nutrition concerns for vulnerable groups such as young children, pregnant women, and the elderly. Reports indicate a sharp rise in child malnutrition, with thousands identified as acutely malnourished. Video footage has shown empty food supply warehouses and long lines of children waiting for meals.

Humanitarian leaders are alarmed by the crisis, with calls for aid systems reform growing. Statements from France, Germany, and the UK’s foreign ministers emphasized the urgent need for unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza. Amid rising food prices—up 1,400% from the ceasefire—residents are resorting to scavenging for cooking fuel. Israeli officials maintain the blockade is essential to weaken militant control, while international organizations have raised concerns of potential war crimes related to civilian starvation. The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties, including over 51,000 deaths since the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas.
