Prosecutors and defendants began selecting jurors for the trial of ten individuals accused in the $9 million jewelry heist from Kim Kardashian during Paris Fashion Week in 2016. On the trial’s opening day, preparations were underway to hear witness testimonies regarding the robbery, in which Kardashian was held at gunpoint in her apartment.
The robbery involved five of the accused, who gained access to the private apartment where Kardashian was staying, using bicycles and on foot. The others face charges related to the planning and tip-offs regarding Kardashian’s location. Dubbed “the grandpa robbers” by the media, many of the defendants are in their 60s and 70s. Notably, one defendant has died since the case began, while another, aged 80, is unfit for trial due to health issues.
Among those on trial is Aomar Ait Khedache, 69, the alleged mastermind. Other significant figures include his son Harminy, 37; Didier “Blue Eyes” Dubreucq, 69; and Gary Madar, 35, Kardashian’s driver’s brother, who reportedly informed the thieves about her whereabouts. A woman, 78-year-old Christiane Glotin, is also accused of helping plan the heist.
Yunice Abbas, 72, one defendant who has admitted involvement, authored a book titled “I Kidnapped Kim Kardashian,” detailing the crime and expressing regret. His lawyer mentioned that Abbas looks forward to explaining his side in court.
In France, defendants do not submit formal pleas, but the absence of cameras in court means proceedings will be recorded by journalists and sketch artists. Kim Kardashian is expected to testify on May 13, recalling the terrifying ordeal when she feared for her life during the incident.
