Newly Unsealed Documents in NYC Mayor’s Criminal Case Reveal Details of Investigation

Federal agents continued to investigate New York City Mayor Eric Adams even as the Justice Department moved to drop a corruption case against him, according to recently unsealed court documents. The investigation, which began in August 2021 when Adams was Brooklyn borough president, examined allegations of improper campaign contributions and influence peddling, including receiving free travel. The case gained public attention in November 2023, when the FBI seized Adams’ phones and iPad.

In February 2024, new leadership at the Justice Department ordered prosecutors in New York to dismiss the charges, arguing they hindered Adams’ support for President Donald Trump’s immigration policy. This directive led to resignations among the federal prosecutors, including Manhattan’s top prosecutor, Danielle Sassoon. Ultimately, a judge dismissed the case at the Justice Department’s request. Prior to this, prosecutors were actively investigating Adams, reportedly close to bringing additional charges for obstruction of justice.

The unsealed documents reveal extensive investigative efforts, including search warrants for various locations related to alleged campaign finance violations. Notably, agents sought warrants for the home of Adams’ romantic partner, Tracey Collins, to access five iPhones linked to an inquiry involving a Turkish diplomat. A warrant application for searches at Gracie Mansion, Adams’ official residence, was also included, detailing his frequent presence there.

Adams’ lawyer criticized the initial charges, asserting they never should have been filed. Adams claims the case’s dismissal vindicates him, although he denies any deal with Trump. The two leaders recently met, further indicating Adams’ continuing alignment with the Trump administration. Despite the legal resolution, Adams faces an uncertain political future, having opted to run as an independent in the November general election rather than participate in the Democratic primary.
