Rehoboth Beach Considers Juvenile Curfew Amid Rising Delinquency
Rehoboth Beach officials are exploring the implementation of a juvenile curfew following alarming increases in youth-related crimes. During a recent meeting, City Manager Taylour Tedder introduced the concept, backed by Police Chief Keith Banks, who reported a staggering 110% rise in juvenile charges and complaints over the past three years. The reported incidents include serious offenses such as robberies, sexual assault, and a hate crime, all involving minors.
Similar measures have been adopted by neighboring towns, including Bethany Beach and Dewey Beach, with Rehoboth officials considering a curfew from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. year-round. According to the National Youth Rights Association, over 400 jurisdictions across the U.S. have enacted juvenile curfews in response to rising crime rates.
While some studies present mixed results regarding the effectiveness of curfews, including a 2016 report indicating that most juvenile crimes occur outside typical curfew hours, Police Chief Banks believes that the current situation necessitates action. He emphasized the importance of public perception, particularly since Rehoboth serves as a tourist destination. "It is unsettling for the community, and we have the data to support the presence of juvenile crime," he stated, advocating for the curfew as a measure to restore safety and comfort.
Additionally, neighboring Seaford recently implemented a juvenile curfew enforced during a mayoral executive order, further illustrating a regional trend toward stricter measures aimed at addressing youth delinquency.
As discussions continue, Rehoboth Beach officials aim to balance community safety and the rights of youth while considering a move that many believe is essential for restoring peace in the area.
