U.S. Sees Increase in Cancer Deaths Associated with Alcohol Consumption

Recent research indicates a troubling trend regarding alcohol-related cancer deaths in the U.S., with annual fatalities doubling from approximately 12,000 in 1990 to over 23,000 in 2021. This increase is particularly pronounced among men aged 55 and older. While overall U.S. cancer deaths have decreased by about 35% during this period, the rise in alcohol-related deaths highlights a significant public health issue, particularly as alcohol is recognized as a carcinogen, similar to tobacco.

The study focuses on seven cancers linked to alcohol consumption: breast, liver, colorectal, throat, voice box, mouth, and esophageal cancers. Although alcohol is not a direct cause for all cases, it contributes significantly, especially as it breaks down into the carcinogen acetaldehyde, impairing DNA and increasing the susceptibility of tissues to other carcinogens. The link between alcohol and cancer has been acknowledged since 1987, with more recent studies associating alcohol consumption with additional cancers.

Data shows that in 1991, 2.5% of cancer deaths in men were linked to alcohol, which increased to 4.2% by 2021; for women, the figures grew from 1.46% to 1.85%. The rise is especially notable in men, where deaths from alcohol-related cancers increased by 56%, compared to nearly 8% for women. Notably, states such as New Mexico and Oklahoma experienced significant increases in these deaths.

As drinking patterns evolve, with growing heavy drinking and binge-drinking behaviors among women, public health messaging must shift. Experts stress the importance of understanding the health risks associated with alcohol consumption, emphasizing that even moderate drinking may have serious health implications. Future research is needed to explore the varying impacts of alcohol on different racial and ethnic groups.
