Delaware Senate Addresses Athletic Disparities Between Public and Private Schools

DELAWARE – In a significant move to ensure competitive equity in interscholastic sports, the Delaware Senate has passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 91. This resolution directs the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) to investigate potential imbalances in athletic success between public and private schools.

The DIAA is tasked with reviewing five years of state championship data to evaluate the performance of private schools in various sanctioned sports events. The initiative aims to assess competitive fairness and will rely on insights from the Public-Private Committee report to develop future policy recommendations.

Concerns have arisen regarding the advantages enjoyed by private schools, particularly their access to more resources and greater flexibility in recruitment, which may lead to their dominance in sports. Notably, private institutions secured 10 state titles in the 2024-2025 school year, intensifying the call for a thorough evaluation of the current landscape.

The DIAA is expected to submit its findings and proposed recommendations to the Delaware General Assembly by April 30, 2026, as lawmakers emphasize the importance of ensuring a level playing field for all student-athletes in the state.
