The Delaware Preservation Fund recently awarded a $4,100 grant to St. Daniel’s Community Church of Iron Hill in Newark. The grant will cover half of the renovation costs for the church, which has suffered from wear and tear, weather damage, and vandalism. Pastor Joe Field expressed gratitude for the funding, noting that it is a blessing for the church, especially since it has a limited budget due to its older congregation.
The University of Delaware’s Center for Historical Architecture and Design recommended St. Daniel’s Community Church for the grant, considering it a high priority project. The church, dating back to the pre-Civil War era and serving as a rare surviving African American church, holds historical significance in the community. The church’s goals include attracting younger members to help preserve its legacy and continue its mission.
The church, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has ties to diverse historical periods, with a cemetery containing the graves of veterans from various wars. The Delaware Preservation Fund aims to support such historical preservation efforts and has closed applications for the year. More information about the Fund and how to apply can be found on their website.
Despite challenges, St. Daniel’s Community Church remains steadfast in its commitment to preserving its history and serving the community, with Pastor Field expressing optimism for the future. With the help of the grant and continued support, the church hopes to attract new members and ensure the longevity of its legacy for generations to come.
