The Eagles have decided to keep veteran James Bradberry on the team after he made the transition from cornerback to safety during the summer. Bradberry, who had a disappointing season in 2023, spent his first eight NFL seasons as a cornerback and was an All Pro in 2022, helping the Eagles reach the Super Bowl.
General manager Howie Roseman praised Bradberry’s football instincts and ability to diagnose plays as reasons for the transition to safety. Bradberry re-signed with the Eagles in the spring of 2023 on a three-year deal worth up to $38 million, but had a poor season and was rotating with rookies towards the end.
Bradberry suggested the move to safety himself during the offseason, which impressed the Eagles considering his struggles as a cornerback and the team’s need for help at safety. Head coach Nick Sirianni commended Bradberry’s professionalism and leadership within the team.
Bradberry acknowledged his poor performance in 2023 and mentioned the Eagles’ acquisitions of young cornerbacks as factors in his decision to switch to safety. Currently, Bradberry is behind CJ Gardner-Johnson, Reed Blankenship, and Avonte Maddox on the depth chart at safety.
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio expressed confidence in Bradberry’s ability to excel at safety, noting his intelligence and experience as valuable assets to the team. Despite the new position, Bradberry is adapting well according to Fangio.
