On the 921st day of the ongoing war, Ukraine faced intense attacks from Russian forces on September 3, 2024. The capital city of Kyiv was hit with dozens of drones and missiles, causing injuries to civilians and damage to critical infrastructure. Other regions, including Dnipro and Kharkiv, also experienced Russian attacks, resulting in casualties and destruction. Meanwhile, fighting continued in eastern Ukraine, with Russia claiming to have gained control of strategic territory.
Russian President, Vladimir Putin, declared advancements on Ukrainian soil and criticized Ukraine for failing to halt their progress. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged challenges in facing Russian forces but highlighted Russia’s lack of recent progress. The conflict has seen an increase in Russian territorial gains in August, marking the largest monthly rise since 2022.
On the diplomatic front, Ukraine criticized Mongolia for failing to arrest Putin, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes. Rights group Amnesty International called for Mongolia to uphold its legal obligations and surrender Putin to the ICC. In Russia, Major General Valery Muminjanov was detained on suspicion of bribery, adding to a series of corruption-related arrests within the Ministry of Defence.
In terms of weapons, Zelenskyy urged Western allies to provide more long-range weaponry and permit strikes deep inside Russia. Romania approved a draft law to donate a Patriot missile defense system to Ukraine, pending parliamentary approval. Zelenskyy also announced a meeting with the International Atomic Energy Agency director in light of recent developments at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.
