Matt Meyer, a Democrat, emerged victorious in the Delaware gubernatorial race against Republican Hans Reigle, a pool management business owner. Meyer’s victory was unexpected as he challenged the traditional ‘Delaware Way’ of selecting candidates and promised a different approach to governance. He emphasized his commitment to fighting for the city of Wilmington, where he grew up and currently resides.
During a phone interview with WHYY News, Meyer revealed that President Joe Biden had called to congratulate him on his win and discuss Delaware races. Meyer expressed his intention to focus on governing based on principles rather than personal preferences. Both Meyer and Reigle promised to address issues such as education reform and housing affordability but differed in their approaches to governance.
Despite initially predicting a victory with a wide margin, Reigle gracefully conceded defeat as results came in, acknowledging that Delaware had chosen one-party rule. He expressed hope that Meyer would lead the state in a positive direction and improve the lives of its residents. Meyer, who served as county executive prior to his gubernatorial win, is set to take office with a vision for change and a commitment to representing all Delawareans.
