HB 1 – Creation of the Veterans Affairs Department in Blue Delaware

Legislation creating a new state-level department and secretary dedicated to veterans issues has passed the House Veterans Affairs Committee and is now heading to the House Appropriations Committee. Sponsored by State Representative Bill Carson, House Bill 1 would establish the Delaware Department of Veterans Affairs to advocate for the 70,000 veterans in the state. The department would work to improve veterans’ healthcare, access to benefits, and advocate for them at state and federal levels. The Commission of Veterans Affairs would continue to operate under the new department’s umbrella, with a new requirement for the Secretary to obtain advice and consent from the Commission on Veteran Affairs for certain changes. The department would aim to unlock federal resources for veterans and propose strategies for elder care and additional veterans homes. Rep. Carson, a veteran himself, stressed the importance of meeting the needs of veterans, while Sen. Nicole Poore emphasized the bipartisan support the bill has received. This proposal is seen as long overdue and a way to honor and care for the men and women who have served and sacrificed for the country.
