Lenape Nation Clan Mother Shelley Windamakwi DePaul and Chief Adam Waterbear DePaul are dedicated to protecting their ancestral home, the Delaware River. The river holds spiritual and cultural significance for the tribe, and they strive to maintain a balance between nature and development. Their activism, in partnership with other organizations, has led to successes such as a ban on fracking in the Delaware River Basin and halting the construction of a proposed dam. The tribe is currently fighting against the construction of warehouses near the river due to concerns about pollution. They believe in finding harmony with their neighbors and establishing partnerships for the future. The Lenape’s commitment to environmental conservation is driven by the need to honor their ancestors and preserve their cultural history. National environmental reporter David Schechter and his team recently traveled along the Delaware River to explore the challenges facing America’s waterways in their documentary “An American River.”
