An 18-year-old teenager named Wesslin Omar Ramirez Castillo was arrested in Nassau County, New York, for violating the county’s face covering ban by wearing a mask in public. He was seen walking down Spindle Road in Levittown wearing a ski mask that covered his face but showed his eyes. Ramirez Castillo was also found to be carrying a 14-inch knife in his waistband. He refused to comply with police commands and was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, obstructing governmental administration, and violating the Mask Transparency Act. The ban on wearing face coverings in public was signed into law on August 15 as a public safety measure to target criminals who conceal their faces. Violators face a misdemeanor charge with penalties of up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
The ban has been controversial, with critics arguing that it could hinder peaceful protests where individuals want to conceal their identities. County legislator Howard Kopel introduced the bill in response to antisemitic incidents during the Israel-Hamas war in October 7. However, the law has been challenged in federal court for violating the Americans with Disabilities Act and potentially exposing health-compromised individuals to ridicule. The ban has exemptions for health and religious reasons, but some believe that it is unnecessary and a waste of taxpayer money.
