The state’s Joint Information Center for elections successfully monitored and addressed issues during Tuesday’s primary election. The JIC, which involves the state Department of Elections, Department of Justice, and other state agencies, received complaints and reports, with the exception of two reports of misinformation on social media.
Department of Elections community relations officer Cathleen Hartsky-Carter stated that the election day went smoothly, with only a couple of posts on social media being reported as spam for spreading false information about voters being turned away. Despite the small issue, the JIC was vigilant in addressing any potentially concerning posts on social media.
Despite a lower voter turnout of about 22% compared to 32% in the 2020 primaries, the JIC received 10 reports from media outlets about the election results webpage crashing. However, Carter reassured that they are prepared for the increased activity expected in the November general election.
The center will reopen on November 4 for the general election and remain active through November 6. Tuesday’s primary election served as a good dress rehearsal for the JIC to handle any issues that may arise in the upcoming election. With a higher voter turnout anticipated in November, the JIC is ready to monitor and address any concerns that may impact the public’s trust in the electoral process.
