With the 2024 general election approaching, state elections officials in Delaware are praising a pay raise for poll workers that was passed earlier this year. According to Cathleen Hartsky-Carter from the Delaware Department of Elections, the pay raise has helped retain poll workers and ensure a smooth staffing of polling places.
The pay raise includes $400 for inspectors, $325 for judges, and $300 for clerks, which is significantly higher than previous election cycles. Hartsky-Carter describes election workers as community-minded individuals who are proud to provide a necessary service. She believes that the pay raise is a way of showing respect for their commitment to the democratic process.
In Delaware, each polling place has one inspector, two judges, and several clerks who work on Election Day, which is scheduled for November 5. Early voting will begin on October 25. The state’s efforts to increase pay for poll workers come at a time when many states are struggling to find enough staff to work at the polls. By recognizing the importance of their role and providing adequate compensation, Delaware is setting an example for other states to follow in order to ensure a smooth and successful election process.
